How do you mount a central box?

In the step-by-step plan below, we will guide you step by step in placing a central box and mounting the correct central box cover. In this step-by-step plan, we have assumed a wooden ceiling, because other types of central boxes are used for concrete ceilings.

Requirements for mounting the central box

Before we get started, it is important to first check if we have the right materials and tools. You will need the following materials and tools:

  • A central box with a suitable central box cover

  • At least two wooden slats

  • A wood saw to cut the slats to the correct length

  • Installation pipes in the correct diameter

  • Screwdriver

  • Drill

Step-by-step plan for installing a central box

Step 1: Preparation
Central boxes are usually mounted in a place where the light point is also located. This is done because all switches and wall sockets are easily accessible from this point and because this is a place where it is relatively easy to conceal the cover plate in the ceiling. Installing a cover plate in the wall or the ground is considerably more difficult. In almost every situation, we therefore recommend installing the central box in the ceiling. In certain situations, such as with an extremely high ceiling, you can also choose to install the central box in the wall, for example.
Note: Always ensure that the central box remains easily accessible. Preferably do not incorporate the central box in the wall or in the insulation material. In addition to the fact that cutting away a piece of insulation material is not ideal for the insulation of your home, it is also a lot more difficult to find the central box in the future. You can often remember where the central box is placed, but also think about the future residents of the home.

Step 2: Attach screws
Place the central box against two wooden slats and attach the screws so that the central box is in the desired place. Never place the screws through the spouts. There is a hole between the spouts through which the central box can be attached with a screw. These universal spouts have a diameter of 16 mm or 19 mm.
Tip: Are you going to place the central box in the insulation material or in the floor? Mark the location clearly so that the central box is easy to trace and therefore accessible.

Step 3: Install the central box
Place the central box on the battens (wooden planks).
Tip: Do you see no possibilities to process a central box in the ceiling? Then choose the so-called normal box system. Here you use cable boxes and installation tubes that are not processed in the wall or in the ceiling.

Step 4: Placing wires
Lead all electrical wires via installation tubes to the central box.
Tip: Do you need larger lengths of installation tube or do you need to make a number of bends? Then choose installation tubes with a diameter of 19 mm. This obviously simplifies pulling the wires compared to a tube with a diameter of 16 mm. Do you not want to pull the wires yourself? Then use ready-made flexible tubes that already contain wire.

Step 5: Connect and check wires

Check that all installation wires are connected correctly before switching the group(s) back on. Then place the cover plate in the ceiling.

Tip: Do you have a concrete ceiling? Central boxes can in principle simply be poured into the concrete. However, we advise against doing this as it involves extra work and therefore time and therefore costs for replacement and repair work. Do you see no other options? Then check to be sure that the central box is suitable for processing into the concrete.

Step 6: Place lampAs a final step, you can mount the lamp (ceiling light) or hang it (pendant lamp) on the central box cover.
Tip: A cover plate with terminal block makes connecting lamps considerably easier.
