Connecting a roller shutter switch

Roller shutters are increasingly used in homes and business premises. They are multifunctional because they offer privacy, can make a room really dark (the darker your bedroom, the better it is for your night's sleep) and provide both sound and heat insulation. These insulating properties work both ways: roller shutters keep the heat inside when it is cold outside and, when it is very warm outside, keep the heat outside if you want to keep it cool inside. To operate a roller shutter, you can use a roller shutter switch. This article explains how to connect a roller shutter switch.

Connecting a roller shutter switch

Connecting a roller shutter switch is relatively simple. In the following step-by-step plan, a 'normal' roller shutter switch is connected, a system without a remote control. Follow the steps below to do this as well and safely as possible.

Step 1: De-energize

It is important that you de-energize the area where you are going to work, you do this by switching the main switch or the circuit breaker of the group you are going to work on. With a voltage detector or multimeter you can test whether the area is really de-energized.

Step 2: Stripping the wires

Strip the wires long enough, approximately 1 cm.

Step 3: Connecting the roller shutter switch

Connect the roller shutter switch using the tables and installation diagram below.
There are two methods for connecting the wires in the switch, namely a screw connection and a plug connection. Screw connections can be used with wires that have a soft or solid core. However, a plug connection is only suitable for wires with a solid core.

Tip: when the shutters go up, while they should go down according to the switch, swap the brown and black wires coming from the motor.

Step 4: Placement and fixing of the switching element

The placement and mounting depends on whether you use a built-in or surface-mounted roller shutter switch.

Built-in roller shutter switch:

Mount the switch element in the wall. Then screw it in place using the mounting points.

Surface-mounted roller shutter switch:
Place the surface-mounted part against the wall and screw it in place. It is important that the indication positions on the surface-mounted part are at the top of the switch.

Step 5: Install the cover frame
Mount the cover frame on the flush-mounted switching element.

Step 6: Install the knob
Place the rotary knob on the cover plate. Note that the indication positions on the rotary knob are on the top of the cover plate.

Step 7: Turn on power
Connecting the roller shutter switch has been successful, switch on the power to test the roller shutter switch.

Step 8: Testing

Move the roller shutters all the way up and then down, there should be no hitch. If this does happen, you should check why the roller shutter does not move smoothly.

Note: it is important that the motor stops at the top point. The motor should not continue beyond the top point!
