LED light flashing

Are you having trouble with a LED lamp that flickers or flickers? This can have several causes. We have created a step-by-step plan that will help you easily identify and solve the problem:

  1. Check connection and components

  2. Check if the group is overloaded

  3. Is the LED lamp actually dimmable?

  4. Is the dimmer an LED dimmer?

  5. Are you using the right type of LED dimmer?

  6. Are you using the right LED transformer, if applicable?

The most common causes of a flickering LED light and how to solve them

1. Check connection and components

Problem: Does an LED lamp suddenly start flashing? This could be due to:

  • a loose wire;

  • dirt on the ends of wires;

  • cable breaks;

  • broken parts (LED lamp, dimmer, transformer).

Solution: Check the connection for loose or damaged wires. Replace the parts one at a time and see if this fixes the flickering.

2. Check if the group is overloaded

Problem: If your LED light does not always flash but only occasionally, this could be caused by another device in the same group. Check if the light only flashes when a certain device is on. Especially heavy devices such as dishwashers, tumble dryers and washing machines can cause this problem. Sometimes even a high-powered microwave connected to the same group can be enough to make an LED light flash.

Solution: Temporarily connect the device you think is the culprit to a different group. This should solve the problem. If not, continue to rule out other devices or causes.

3. Is the LED lamp actually dimmable?

Problem: Not every LED lamp is suitable for dimming! If you connect a dimmer to a non-dimmable LED lamp, there is a good chance that it will flicker. This is because the lamp does not receive enough power.

Solution: Replace the flashing LED bulb with an LED bulb that you know for sure is dimmable or replace the dimmer (temporarily) with a light switch. LED bulbs always indicate on the packaging whether they are dimmable.

4. Maak je wel gebruik van een LED dimmer?

Problem: If your dimmable LED lamp flickers, chances are you are not using the right dimmer. A halogen dimmer has too high a power supply for an LED lamp. The LED lamp can flicker and even break.

Solution: Check whether you are using a (suitable!) LED dimmer.

5. Are you using the correct type/type of LED dimmer?

Problem: If your LED lamp continues to flicker even with an LED dimmer, then it may be that you are using the wrong type of dimmer. If the power of the LED lamp does not fall (too little or too much power) within the power range of the LED dimmer, then the lamp will flicker.

Solution: Check whether the power of the LED lamp and the LED dimmer match each other.

6. Are you using the correct LED transformer?

Problem: For LED lamps of 12V, 24V or 36V, for example, you need an LED transformer or LED driver. This transformer/driver ensures that the 230V from the socket is converted to 12V/24V/36V for the LED lamp. A halogen transformer ensures that an LED lamp has too high a current supply. Are you already using an LED transformer/driver? Then it is possible that you are not using the right type. If the voltage of the LED lamp is lower than the output voltage of the LED transformer, it may start to flicker.

Solution: Make sure you use the correct LED transformer for your LED lamp. The output voltage (V) must be equal to or slightly lower than the voltage of the lamp. For example, if a transformer has an output voltage of 11.2V, it is suitable for a 12V LED lamp.

Can a flickering light cause a fire?

A blinking/flickering lamp can cause a fire when it flickers due to a loose wire or an incorrect connection. But, in such a case (if still present in the house of course) a normal incandescent or halogen lamp can also cause a fire. And this can also happen with an electrical appliance where the cord is not properly mounted. If resistance occurs, sparking occurs and overheating occurs, this can lead to a fire. Therefore, if in doubt, always check the connection and the wires on it are properly secured, or have this checked by an electrician.
